Once the “big day” has come and gone, couples set sail for their honeymoon. A chance to travel to an exotic locale for a week full of content, relaxation and romance. It’s a dream come true. But, there’s just one small problem.
The wedding was expensive, right?
Even after the wedding is all said and done, no couple should have to skimp on their honeymoon due to financial reasons. However, it probably seems like most online lists of best honeymoon destinations assume that if you’re thinking of traveling for your honeymoon, you have some sort of money tree growing in your backyard. We’re here to tell you that there are PLENTY of honeymoon destinations that cater to the budget-minded couple, while still offering a romantic and dream-worthy getaway.
If you’re in the early stages of honeymoon planning, we suggest checking out three of our favorite resources to help get you started:
- TripAdvisor: This is a great starting point to be able to read real reviews from like-minded travelers within a specific city. You’ll learn where to stay, how to fly, what to do and where to eat. TripAdvisor also compares prices from more than 200 hotel booking sites so you can find the lowest price on the hotel that’s right for you both.
- AirBnB: After you’ve explored you’re options on TripAdvisor, we always recommend that our brides check out AirBnb. Because they are their own entity, and homeowners can set their own prices for apartment rentals, you’d be surprised to find dramatically cheaper lodging costs in a city compared to its hotel counterparts. One of our White Box brides is venturing to Venice for her honeymoon and told us the average hotel rate was around $250/night! Destined to find a cheaper alternative, she said her and her fiancé scored an adorable AirBnB apartment by the canal for a mere $144/night AND it included its’ own kitchen. Put in the research, and you’ll find great deals hanging around!
- Groupon: Groupon constantly promotes all-inclusive destination getaways at a fraction of its’ typical cost. The only downside is that the travel dates can often times be limited. However, if you can score a trip within your date range, you’ll save big!
Now, let’s jump to the fun stuff! 5 Affordable Honeymoon Destinations
1.Dominican Republic: When referring to the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is not as heavily touristed as other trendy locales. Since much of the island is rural, you’ll find lots of local restaurants and shops with reasonable prices not designed to gouge tourists. Most of the resorts in the Dominican Republic are all-inclusive, which includes your meals, snacks and alcohol, so you’ll know exactly what you are paying for, without any hidden fees or fears of overspending.
2.Puerto Rico: Puerto Rico is another Caribbean town that doesn’t have as big of a buzz as places like Jamaica, Cancun or Cozumel, so the prices are much more affordable, while still reaping the benefits of a gorgeous and relaxing resort. Puerto Rico is also a great option if you not only enjoy the beaches, but also a little history. The magnificence of the cobblestone streets in Old San Juan are a must-see. Added bonus: If you’re a US citizen, you don’t need to apply or renew your passport to visit!
3.Iceland: Save the beaches for your anniversary trip and spend your honeymoon witnessing the spectral green glow of the Aurora Borealis, set against a backdrop of a dream-worthy starry black sky. Iceland is hundreds of miles closer to North America than the rest of Europe, so you can save a decent amount on airfare. Tip – Groupon is constantly promoting deals for all-inclusive trips to Iceland, so keep a look out!
4.Ireland: Think, cozy bed and breakfasts, lush landscapes, charming villages and historic castles. Ireland is a gorgeous honeymoon destination that will have you immersed in its’ rich history and stunning views. We suggest starting your trip in Dublin, rent a car and drive along the countryside, making sure to stop at popular attractions like the Cliffs of Moher and the River Shannon. Airfare is extremely reasonable to Ireland, especially if you’re flying from the east coast, so plan in advance to have an affordable honeymoon, and be sure to check Groupon for savings as well!
5.Thailand: Thailand is known for being wallet-friendly for US travelers, while also being one of the Southeast Asia’s most popular destinations. Thailand is a great choice if you’re looking to spend your days on a tropical beach, while venturing into Bangkok in the afternoon to view the unbelievable temples and eat delicious street food. You may find that airfare is a little steep, however, everything else is incredibly affordable once you arrive – especially accommodations and food.
